It was pretty dark, before the dawn.
The Kansas City Royals’ Cole Ragans was cruising through a perfect game, at the very least a one-hitter. Then catcher Salvador Perez unleashed a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and things got darker still.
With nowhere to go but up, the Dodgers’ Miguel Rojas hit a 3-1 pitch from Ragans into the left field bleachers in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing Andy Pages along for the ride. Then the-most-likely-and-the-most-unlikely Chris Taylor, hit one deep into the left field bleachers, tying the score.
Freddie Freeman brought Mookie Betts home with a single in the bottom of the eighth, and Alex Vescia extinguished the KC threat for good in the top of the ninth.
“To be looking at a no-hitter, and then being in control of the game was really something,” said Dodger Manager Dave Roberts after the game.
Until a single by Ohtani in the fourth inning, Ragans was perfectly in control and quietly working on a perfect game, keeping the Dodgers silent.
Roberts singled out pitcher Gavin Stone who, not counting the home run from Perez, was also having a memorable game.
Of Taylor, who has been quiet hitting-wise for much of the season, Roberts said, “He is a great teammate, he is always watching and he is always ready when he is called upon.”
The Dodgers will face Kansas City again tomorrow afternoon at Dodger Stadium.
