1 million Switch consoles sold in China since 2019
- by Damien McFerran
Nintendo has shipped 1 million Switch consoles in China since launching the system in the country at the close of 2019, according to its Chinese partner Tencent. This indicates that Nintendo has now surpassed both Microsoft and Sony as China's biggest console device seller.
According to Niko Partners' Daniel Ahmad, it is estimated that the total installed base of the Switch in the country is over 4 million units, taking into account the many units which have been imported from outside of China. Ahmed also confirms that with sales of 1 million units since 2019, the Switch has out-performed the combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the same period.
China is the world's biggest video game market, but it is dominated by mobile and PC games, with consoles being considered something of a niche proposition. Until 2014, consoles were banned in the region – but this is a precisely why China is such an important territory to succeed in, because there's massive potential for growth, unlike North America, Japan or Europe.
Niko Partners thinks China’s console market revenue will climb to $2.15 billion in 2024 – making it twice as big as it was in 2019 – and being the top dog in such a profitable market is only going to help Nintendo. The popularity of the Switch in China is also going to help Nintendo increase its sales targets for the console, which has sold 68.30 million units worldwide as of September 30th, 2020.
Nintendo is predicting that it will sell 24 million Switch units for the year ending March 2021.

At least they were able to penetrate a market that looked impossible to enter. Even if the average Chinese Switch gamer has much less options than someone anywhere else.

I wonder how much they had to censor to keep the government happy? Maybe not so much with Nintendo content I guess.

@Dezzy Isn't there only 3 games officially available for the Switch in China?! New Super Mario Bros U, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Odyssey I believe.

@Giancarlothomaz Switch is going to smash Wii sales I'd say. Will probably overtake it by end of 2021.

Switch outselling New generation consoles everywhere gives me a strange kind of pleasure. Proof that we don’t need 60fps or 8k, just good games.

Any info on what the top ten best selling games for the system are there? Be interesting to see some Chinese developed games that we don't know about in the West.

These numbers are in stark contrast with the official sales numbers provided by the Chinese Communist Party, which state that there have been 4 Switches sold in China.

@AlienigenX well... I agree to a certain extent. It’s cool but with the sales it’s still the most disrespected. So many games that should be on the console and publisher aren’t even trying. There will always be that factor with Nintendo. They can have the best most popular console and still missing top AAA games. Now some of it is because of their hardware and with switch we know this isn’t the case for some games. A sad reality.

@Qwertyninty a sad reality? It clearly doesn't need what you think of as AAA games (I won't list how many games that I consider AAA that the Switch does have as I don't have the time) it's number one, so the demand is there - and the demand continues to increase.

@Lordplops that’s cool but you still alienate a lot of gamers... or make it so that a gamer has to go and purchase another console. My wife and I love playing cod games together. Guess what we can’t do that on switch. GTA series is one of the top sellers year after year... where is that game on switch? I’m not doubting AAA games are on switch. But there are big hugely popular ones that are missing and shouldn’t be. The publishers seem to not care and that’s disappointing.

@Qwertyninty I agree but most AAA games nowadays are safe bets, they look gorgeous thats for sure, but the gameplay is all the same (most of the more hyped AAA games of the last generation were boring as hell IMO, witcher, Read dead, horizon, tsutshima, watch dogs, assassins creed, Cyberpunk, they are all the same game, they only change the setting and some minor gameplay tweaks, I had more fun playing Animal crossing, or even Paper Mario, and those games are thrash on a technical level if we compare them with the titles I just mentioned) I am
Not a Nintendo diehard fan by any means (The only Nintendo consoles I owned were the family game, the 3DS and the switch, and I had every playstation iteration) but this westernization of development of games, this FPS madness over entertainment is hurting the industry. We need more fresh ideas, and I am glad a much less powerful hardware is giving the “big boys” a run for its money.

@AlienigenX o can agree there is a middle ground. No reason though for the switch to be missing some games. I can play cod on a mobile phone but not switch. I can play GTA on a mobile phone but not switch. In my opinion this is not okay and something Nintendo should take personally. Their gamers should have the ability to play every game available “unless” it’s technically impossible. There are some games that fit that description. I thinks it’s to each their own but no one should be alienated. Me personally I can’t play animal crossing and don’t get the appeal. But you and millions of other do. Millions upon millions of people buy cod games every year. No reason why it shouldn’t be available on switch.

@AlienigenX I agree to an extent but even titles on nintendo software suffer from this, hence why we have no new f-zero because they dont think it will sell well enough
For me I've lost interest in a lot of modern games, theres still modern games I enjoy but last one for my switch i got excited for was luigis mansion 3, that was a long time ago now, picked up mario 3d all stars but meh
I really hope they've got some announcements planned that will get me excited, I dont play animal crossing so luigi mansion 3 was the last title I've had any interest in, I'm hoping we get a new star fox or something at some point

@AlienigenX "they are all the same game, they only change the setting and some minor gameplay tweaks" ... You coud literally apply that exact same argument to Animal Crossing, and many of Nintendo's first party games. In fact, that's been a common criticism of Nintendo games for decades, that's why BotW was so refreshing because it was a bold and drastic change for the better.

@yuwarite I know, I understand that from a franchise and one developer. All Ubisoft games are copies of themselves, ok, its the ubisoft formula, you can like it or not. It bothers me when it becomes a trend from different franchises and different developers.

And this is why innovation always succeeds over hardware capabilities. One of the biggest marketing goals of the PlayStation 4/5 or Xbox One/Xbox Series is powerful hardware, giving players in China virtually no reason to play on those consoles if they could just get a PC, especially if you consider the limited number of games. The Switch, on the other hand, has a valid reason because it takes the best of both worlds in China's market - mobility of a phone, but the power to run bigger games - not to mention to whole idea of innovation around Joy Cons.

Last I heard there were hardly any games available for it though.
But honestly, I don't think anyone should be doing business with China until they stop abusing human rights.
