About this dataThe map shows the average I.C.U. occupancy at nearby hospitals in the most recent week with data reported. The data is self-reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services by individual hospitals. It excludes counts from hospitals operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indian Health Service. Numbers for hospitalized patients are based on inpatient beds and include I.C.U. beds. Hospitalized Covid-19 patients include both confirmed and suspected Covid-19 patients.

About the data

In data for Virginia, The Times primarily relies on reports from the state. The state does not update its data on weekends. Prior to July 17, 2021, it released new data daily. The state reports cases and deaths based on a person’s permanent or usual residence.

The Times has identified reporting anomalies or methodology changes in the data.

More about reporting anomalies or changes
  • Nov. 11, 2022:The Times began including death certificate data reconciled by the C.D.C., resulting in a one-day increase in total deaths.
  • Aug. 15, 2022 to Aug. 18, 2022:Virginia removed many cases in the city of Lexington and added many cases in Rockbridge County.
  • Aug. 11, 2022:Virginia reallocated many cases from the city of Buena Vista into Rockbridge County.
  • March 19, 2021:Virginia removed around 90 deaths that were determined to be unrelated to Covid-19.
  • March 3, 2021:Over several days, Virginia added many deaths that occurred earlier in 2021.
  • March 1, 2021:Over several days, Virginia added many deaths that occurred earlier in 2021.
  • Feb. 26, 2021:Over several days, Virginia added many deaths that occurred earlier in 2021.
  • Nov. 23, 2020:Virginia added many cases from the previous two days after data system maintenance.
  • Nov. 16, 2020:Virginia added many cases from the previous several days after data system maintenance.
  • Sept. 15, 2020:Virginia added additional deaths because of a data backlog.
  • Aug. 7, 2020:Virginia added a backlog of cases from the previous two days after resolving a technical issue.
  • May 6, 2020:Virginia did not release new data because of a technical issue.

The tallies on this page include probable and confirmed cases and deaths.

Confirmed cases and deaths, which are widely considered to be an undercount of the true toll, are counts of individuals whose coronavirus infections were confirmed by a molecular laboratory test. Probable cases and deaths count individuals who meet criteria for other types of testing, symptoms and exposure, as developed by national and local governments.

Governments often revise data or report a single-day large increase in cases or deaths from unspecified days without historical revisions, which can cause an irregular pattern in the daily reported figures. The Times is excluding these anomalies from seven-day averages when possible. For agencies that do not report data every day, variation in the schedule on which cases or deaths are reported, such as around holidays, can also cause an irregular pattern in averages. The Times uses an adjustment method to vary the number of days included in an average to remove these irregularities.
