The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

THE PLAIN DEALER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1995 RECREATION Internationals coach acclaimed A Soccer club racks up victories under ex-Olympian Nanchoff By AMY ROSEWATER PLAIN DEALER REPORTER There is a sports club in Cleveland that has won five national ti'tles in five years. This same club won nine state titles and two regional titles. The team is the Internationals. Soccer Club, a conglomeration of youth boys and girls teams 19 teams in all in Northeast Ohio. It comes as no surprise that the 'coach is George Nanchoff, a member of the 1980 U.S.

Olympic soccer team and a former member of the Cleveland Force. "It's a big thing for national pride," said Nanchoff, a Yugoslavian native who has coached the Internationals since its inception nine years ago. "Where I'm from, everything would stop for a game. The village would clear out. It was a big shock when I came over here, that there's no soccer here.

But it has grown. "And when you start liking something, you can't stop." it Nanchoff's enthusiasm seems to have rubbed off on his teams. 'His under-13 boys team won the Dana Cup in Denmark in July in the under-14 division. The boys under-16 team is ranked as one of the top three teams in the world after finishing third in the Gothia Cup the world's largest soccer tournament. Not to mention that every team in the club nine boys teams and 10 girls teams qualified to for the state finals this year.

"I looked at other teams, and I didn't like them," said Tom Fisher, who was on the under-12 team that won a national indoor championship title and will play on the under-13 team this year. "George spotted me and asked me to join his team. He's a coach I look up to. He's a good influence. I think this team has been a big turning point for me.

"I can credit the team with that. We play a lot of good competition, and that's made me a better player." But it did not start out that successful. "I always believed you don't build a team that has success right away," Nanchoff said. "It's a big transition starting from scratch. To be honest with you, when I started coaching kids, a lot of them were 14, 15 and 16.

That's kind of too late. "But this group of kids now some of them have been together since they were very young." Mike Stoerkel is one Internationals player who started playing soccer very young; he joined the Internationals team five years ago. At the time, he was 8 and playing on the under-12 team. He doesn't hit the ball very far on most shots, always using a driver off the tee and a 4-wood on the fairway and up to the green. "He's not long, but he's straight," said 69-year-old Henry Cope, part of the foursome in a recent outing.

"If I could putt a little bit better, I'd have a much better score," Potter said. Long shots might not be his forte, but longevity runs in Potter's family. His mother lived into her 80s and his father died at age 92. Potter lived in St. Louis for about 60 years before moving to DeSoto, to live with his daughter, Leta Duffin.

He decided to get his exercise by walking around the local high school track. He got bored walking in circles and searched for a new place. "They had a nine-hole golf course," Potter said. "I went down to the clubhouse, signed up for a membership in the golf club and started playing. "Never took a lesson.

I'd Salem in 1992, Potter headed to Heather Hills, five minutes from his daughter's home. "He wanted to know if we had a senior league," said Roger Ashley, who coordinates the weeky senior tourney. "I told him we did, and he wanted to know the age limit. I told him 55 to 80. He said, 'I'm 20 years past that.

Can I He's been playing ever since." Heather Hills is the perfect for Potter. It is a par-62 course bordered by condominiums. There are no sand traps, and errant tee shots wind up in a creek. Heather Hills has no par-5s, and nine of its holes measure 150 yards or less. The longest hole is the 325-yard par-4 third hole.

Every Wednesday, some of Winston-Salem's seniors gather at the course for their weekly tournament. "Mr. Potter," as everyone calls him, is always among the contestants. After leaving the farm in Turney, at age 21, he spent his professional years as a clerk for the Missouri Pacific railroad, for the Army and later for a car dealership. He held the last job for 52 years, and said he missed days of work.

Recently, Potter showcased his skills at the 1995 U.S. National Senior Sports Classic in San Antonio. Trying to shoot a score better than his age, Potter struggled in with a 340 over 36 holes at Tapatio Springs, a par-72, course. He points to the 74 sand traps as part of his problem.
