Gladiators, the energetic and action-packed game show that pushes humans to their physical limits, is almost here.

The beloved Saturday night staple will welcome a new host of superhuman contestants to test their strength and speed against the Gladiators in thiscompetitive game show.

A brand new crop of Gladiators has been selected for the BBC show, with Olympians, sprinters and rugby professionals comprising the motley crew.

The Chase’s Bradley Walsh and his son, Barney, will be on hosting duties for the revival of the beloved 1990s show.

It’s the second revival of the show, which originally aired on ITV for eight seasons between 1992 and 2000 and then two seasons on Sky One in 2008 and 2009.

Fury: Jodie Ounsley

Fury currently plays rugby for Exeter Chiefs Women and represented England in rugby sevens.

She’s described as having “power and passion for competition”, as well as having Gladiators in her blood — her dad was on the show in 2008.

Hailing from West Yorkshire, Fury is also the first deaf Gladiator, describing it as her superpower.

Bionic: Matty Campbell

Bionic is so-named because he’s as big and strong as a machine.

Campbell was an avid football player until a car crash scuppered these plans and led him to seek solace in the gym, where he found his new calling: bodybuilding.

Ahead of the reboot’s release, Bionic said: “Never in a million years did I expect to get the call to be a Gladiator, it’s a feeling that’ll never sink in.

“I’m just a normal lad from Teesside. All the training and hard work has finally paid off for me – I can’t wait to get started.”

Electro: Jade Packer

Hailing from Essex, Packer has been dubbed Electro for her strength, speed and agility that is said to be “electrifying”.

She has a background in bodybuilding but is also a sports model, fitness coach and hybrid athlete with experience in Crossfit.

Her speed has seen her be named one of the top 10 fastest runners in the UK at the age of 12, while as a bodybuilder she earned four Top 3 UKBFF – and she’s earned a Gold at the English Grand Prix.

Packer said, “I hope Electro can spark an unstoppable pursuit for a new generation of athletes. I’m ready to light up the arena with a different kind of energy.”

Steel: Zack George

Steel is 2020 UK’s Fittest Man title holder Zack George. He’s described as having an “unbreakable strength” and is a UK CrossFit Star, ranking 26 out of 126,461 on the global CrossFit leader board.

George said of joining the show: “I was inspired by Gladiators as a child, but never imagined I’d be physically fit enough to be considered a ‘superhuman’. I hope a new generation of fans will look up to me as their new strong, unbreakable hero, Steel.”

Phantom: Toby Olubi

Londoner Olubi was previously a member of Team GB’s bobsleigh team, competing in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

He has previously earned the title of fastest bobsledder in the UK push championships for four consecutive years, and is also a skilled sprinter.

“This is a dream come true for me”, he said.

“I’m a 90s kid so the Gladiators of [the] past were my version of real life superheroes. Now I’ve got the chance to don the big ‘G’ and be an inspirational figure myself.”

Giant: Jamie Christian Johal

Standing at six foot five inches tall, viewers have been warned not to be fooled by the former firefighter turned bodybuilder’s “big, friendly giant” looks.

“I feel like everything in life has led me here,” he said of joining the show. “I’m honoured to be part of this iconic show that I watched as a child. I’ll be bringing my GIANT stature and personality, so contenders better come prepared!”

Viper: Quang Luong

Luong has dedicated his life to fitness and spends every day training and bodybuilding.

Luong can bench press an impressive 150kg, which is the same weight as an adult panda.

His key skill is “storming off”, adding that his favourite of the original Gladiators was Wolf: “He was the baddie, and now I’m the baddie,” he said.

“I was born to be a Gladiator,” he adds. “I am strong, powerful and just like a viper, I can attack with speed.”

Fire: Montell Douglas

Douglas is the first female UK athlete to compete at both the summer and winter Olympics (Beijing 2008 and Beijing 2022) as a sprinter and bobsledder. She’s described as “fierce” and someone the other contenders need to watch out for.

Fire is one fast Gladiator. She can run 100m in 11.05 seconds.

“As a strong and powerful woman, I’m living proof that you can achieve your dreams, no matter what age or background, if you believe and keep pushing,” said Douglas. “I’m ready to light up the competition!”

Comet: Ella-Mae Rayner

With the speed of a comet, Rayner is a former elite-gymnast and semi-professional diver who loves to walk on her hands.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be Comet,” she said.

“I loved watching Gladiators growing up. I specifically remember Jet – she was an icon for me as a child and one of the reasons I became a gymnast. I can’t believe I will be following in her footsteps. It really is a dream come true.”

Legend: Matt Morsia

Legend is a former international athlete and medal-winning powerlifter who can triple-jump over 50 feet, longer than a double-decker bus.

Morsia is also a social media influencer and the author of a Sunday Times bestselling book about training.

He said: “I could’ve spent the last two months eating doughnuts and playing Dungeons & Dragons and I’d still be better than everyone else. I’m called Legend for a reason.”

Athena: Karenjeet Kaur Bains

Multi-award-winning powerlifting champion Bains is the proud owner of a Guinness World Record for most bodyweight squats in a minute.

As well as being a physical force to be reckoned with, she is also a chartered accountant, demonstrating that she has both brains and brawn.

“I represent all those from diverse and minority backgrounds, especially women, that have ever been denied the opportunity to pursue their dreams in sport,” she says.

“I hope I can be a role model and show the levels a female can achieve if she is given the opportunity to follow her passion and given the wings to fly.”

Sabre: Sheli McCoy

Hailing from Dundee, McCoy can deadlift 160kg – that’s heavier than a baby African elephant.

She trains for 16-19 hours each week and has competed in numerous British weightlifting championships.

A fan of the show since childhood, McCoy says: “I truly hope Sabre will inspire and empower the younger generation of strong capable females just as the Gladiators I once watched inspired me to be a confident athletic women,” said McCoy.

“It is Sabre’s time to shine – here come the powerful girls.”

Apollo: Alex Gray

With a background in both national rugby and NFL, Gray is renowned for his competitive nature.

“Gladiator ready? You better believe I am,” he said.

“After playing rugby and in the NFL, the opportunity to inspire as Apollo is a dream come true. I plan on leading from the front and never giving up.”

Dynamite: Emily Steel

At just 20-years-old, Steel is the youngest Gladiator in the team, but underestimate her at your peril.

The swimmer and CrossFit athlete earned her nickname due to her explosive and dangerous temperament.

“I’m too young to remember the original Gladiators, but my parents loved it and suggested I try out,” she said.

“Dynamite really does represent who I am and I’m excited to showcase what I can do in the games”.

Nitro: Harry Aikines-Aryeetey

Team GB sprinter and world gold medalist, Aikines-Aryeetey, was named as the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Yearin 2005.

The Olympian has won gold four times in the men’s 100m European Championships and at the Commonwealth Games.

“Becoming a Gladiator is another great achievement! A childhood dream come true!” he said “I can’t wait to be in the arena and bring Nitro to Gladiators!”

Diamond: Livi Sheldon

Standing at six feet tall, Sheldon is a formidable competitor.

After graduating with a degree in Sports Science, she took up bodybuilding, becoming a British Finalist ‘England Toned Figure’.

“When I was growing up I used to get picked on for being taller than everyone else,” she said.

“Now I get to show everyone that being unique is your superpower. I can’t wait to get into the arena and take on the contenders as Diamond.”
